Am attempting to incorporate "Danny's Song" by Kenny Loggins into an
acoustic set, but I've found two different versions of verse two...one
"Seems as though a month ago I was down and tied..."
"Seems as though a month ago I was Beta Chi..."
Now, in all honesty, listening to the original recording of Loggins
singing, it sounds to me like he's saying "Beta Chi"...but that
doesn't seem to fit with the song, you know? The "down and tied" part
seems to fit better...
Anyone with a better ear for lyrics out there know for sure what this
line should be?
I would guess (though I have no authority on this) that it's "down and
*tired*". That makes much more sense than either of the other two...

I've never seen anything other than the "Beta Chi" version when that
verse was included. Of course, several artists leave it out entirely
(Anne Murray, Lonestar, etc.)

Beta Chi. I don't know about a better ear, but that's what the
songbook says.

: Seems to me that, as usual, people are trying to make something
: complicated out of something pretty straight-forward.
:
: Sounds to me like it's nothing more than, "Gee, seems like a month ago
: I was still in college, now I'm gonna be a daddy..."

This thread reminded me of a story John Prine told about a line from one of his songs.
Seems that at a concert he was taking requests and some lady yelled, "play the an-cho-la-ta song!"
He said he'd never written such a song. But she insisted that he had. John said, 'well, could
you tell me how some of the words go?" She said, 'he ate the whole an-cho-lotta and then fell on the ground'.

The lyric was: "It's a half inch of water and you think you're gonna drown"
