Can you help identify the title and artist from this late 60's (?) song?
Lyrics: "on her way to work one morning, on the path down by the lake, a
tender-hearted woman spied a poor half-frozen snake..." She takes this sad
snake in, lays it by her fireplace and nurses it back to health. As she
cuddles this snake she now loves, the snake give her a fatal bite! The
classic line the snake "says" to her after the fatal wound is: "You knew
darn well I was a snake before you brought me in." I was thinking it was
R.B. Greaves, but now I dunno...? Thanks!

It was Al Wilson: The Snake, got to #27 in the fall of '68.

I could be wrong, but I think the late Lou Rawls also recorded this
song.

I believe that Johnny Rivers also recorded it.

Sounds like a Wicked snake.

If I had been there, my snake would have swallowed it up.
