Someone please help me, I can't stand it. When I was a kid, my mother
had an album with someone singing the Man of La Mancha "Impossible
Dream" song. It was well done and full of feeling, and wasn't rushed
through. But I cannot figure out who was singing! I can say it was NOT
one of these people who do a version:

American Idol person(s)
Ames Brothers
Andy Williams
Anthony Warlow
Carter Usm
Colm Wilkinson
David Ruffin
Elvis Presley
Frank Sinatra
Glen Campbell
Glenn Yarborough
Gordon Lightfoot
Gordon Macrae
Gregory Cross
Harry Secombe
Jack Jones
Jack Scott
Jacques Brel
Jeff Ronne Jr.
Jerry Vale
Jim Nabors
Johnny Mathis
Ken Boothe
Lettermen
Luther Vandross
Matt Monro
Montovani
Placido Domingo
Ray Conniff Singers
Richard Kiley
Robert Goulet
Rod Mckuen
Roger Whitaker
Roger Williams
Sammy Davis Jr.
Smothers Brothers
Temptations
Tevin Campbell
The Bachelors
Timothy Breese
Tom Jones
Tony Sandler/Ralph Young
Unbekannter Kunstler
Wayne Newton

Could it have been Tony Bennett, Jerry Vale, Sergio Franchi, or Mario
Lanza? I can't find these people doing a version but they have the
right kind of voice. Please if anyone knows of a version I don't have
listed above, please post so I can track it down. I must find it again!

Thanks so much.

I notice your list doesn't include Peter O'Toole, who played Don
Quixote in the 1972 movie. (Of course, you rarely hear his voice
compared to Mario Lanza and the rest on your list....)

If you can tell us roughly what year "when I was a kid" corresponds
to, that might help eliminate things that came later.

Ooops, I forgot that Peter O'Toole didn't get his versions into the
film. From IMDB:
=======================================================================
Peter O'Toole recorded his vocal tracks for the film, but realized
that his own singing voice was not good enough for the requirements of
the music, so he assisted in the search for a voice double. The man
O'Toole picked sounded nothing like him, so a new search was begun,
and eventually 'Simon Gilbert' was selected as the singing voice of
Don Quixote, because his singing voice sounded the most like O'Toole's
speaking voice.

Thanks for the info so far! I'm going to move this to the top just so
the list of who I know about already is here but not in the way.

<< If you can tell us roughly what year "when I was a kid" corresponds

Well in truth I'd be glad to know about any other versions, but the one
I must find, hmm let me see, I must have been listening to it around
1965-1972 I'm guessing. That doesn't mean it was recorded then, it
could be older. But after that I would have been able to start getting
my own records.

Well, you probably wouldn't have heard this version unless you were in
Australia but Kamahl did a version probably in the 1970s.

Have you tried looking at www.allmusic.com? You can search by the name of a
song but it's not that good for older stuff.

Regards,
Peter.

Thank you, I hadn't tried. I tried CDUniverse.com and that one didn't
have any I don't have already. The Allmusic has some I don't have, but
also I don't think my mom would have had any of these. I'll still try
them though. How is Allmusic for orders? It seems I have to buy all my
music online nowadays.

I've never ordered anything from them. I just use it to look things up. Good
luck with your search.

Peter.

You didn't list Alex Harvey, his version is top notch but very special so I'm
not sure that's the one you're seeking, though it had to be mentioned :-)
