Heard Mariah Carey's version of titled song on the radio today, but tried to
remember who wrote the original(70's) version? I thought it might be Eric
Carmen or Tommy James.. someone like that... Anyone know?

Thanks,

TJ

If its the same song I'm thinking of, it was done by Harry Nilsson.

Harry Nilsson - Without You
(written by: Ham-Evans)

No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

No, I can't forget tomorrorow
When I think of all my sorrows
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know

I can't live if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give any more
Can't live if living is without you
I can't give, I can't give any more

No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

Can't live if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give anymore
I can't live if living is without you
Can't live, I can't give anymore
(Living is without you)

Harry Nilsson - Without You

That's the one...by the way, for those interested, "Ham-Evans" were members of
Badfinger, the main band (apart from the Beatles) associated with Apple
Records...Badfinger recorded "Without You" before Nilsson did, but of course
Harry had the bigger hit...that's unexpected because at that point in his career
he was the ultimate singer-songwriter and yet had one of his biggest early
successes with a song somebody else wrote....

Because it wasn't a Nilsson composition, it was about the only hit of his that
*wasn't* included on the tribute CD "For Love of Harry"...(check that one out if
you get a chance...I kept wondering if anybody would have the nerve to tackle
"Coconut"; turned out to be Fred Schneider, at which point I smiled and thought
to myself "of course")....r

I seem to remember there was even more grief to the story than 2 suicides
(which is bad enough). A Sunday paper did a long piece on where the money
from this song goes. I can't remember the details (sorry, but publishing and
master rights issues can be very complex) but this book seems to have the
sordid details, although I haven't read it personally.

Yep Norm, that's it! I could hear the voice but just couldn't think of who it
belonged to...

Thanks!

That's NOT what the OP asked.

And that IS.

Ham and Evans were two members of a band called Badfinger who recorded on
Apple.

Both, I believe, subsequently committed suicide.

There can't be many bands with two suicides in their numbers!

I can think of one other band.....early 70's hard rock band Atomic Rooster.
Founding member Vincent Crane swallowed four hundred Anadin tablets on a
stormy St Valentine's Day in 1989 while long-time drummer Paul Hammond
overdosed on methadone in London a couple of years later.
cheers, Barry
