My 1993--1995 poem and song fragments

Here's a few of my poetry and song snippets from 1993 -- 1995:

https://www.nfld.com//~dalton/poemfrag.html

I won’t copy and paste them all here since then some
needed spacing in some of them won’t be reproduced,
at least in Hogwasher newsreader which I use when
I am in St. John’s.

Back then I had good wordplay ability but suffered from
an inability to complete projects. I hope that my creativity
will return soon and that it will include the ability to
complete projects and to do longer poems and songs.

Constructive(!) criticism is welcome.

Some of them do show my interest in Sarah McLachlan,
but I never bothered her. However her record label
person who was on the mailing list must have relayed
the best of my writing to her since she silently approached
me twice in the spring of 1995, which is reflected in some
of the lyrics on her 1997 Surfacing album.

Mr. Dalton, you have no poetry writing talent. At. All.
Nancy G. you are not a very good judge of poetry, but you sure are a great know-it-all...

And a stalker troll, that's your main, or only, talent... ha ha.

First, you should find out how to write poems and not the embarrassingly juvenile, no meter examples that you have offered.

Sure, she "silently approached" you. Add delusional to your diagnosis of bi-polar. She is singing her songs TO YOU, with HIDDEN MEANINGS and MESSAGES. Look up Erotomania.

"In 1994, McLachlan was sued by Uwe Vandrei, an obsessed fan from Ottawa, who alleged that his letters to her had been the basis of the single "Possession". The lawsuit was also challenging for the Canadian legal system since Vandrei was an admitted stalker whose acknowledged goal in filing the lawsuit was to be near McLachlan. Consequently, precautions were taken to ensure McLachlan's safety if she had to be in the same location as Vandrei. Before the trial began, however, Vandrei was found dead in an apparent suicide."

Good selection. Zod.
I learned so much about a wide variety of music in the Navy, a very diverse group of men who become sailors...

Look up Erotomania.
Have you listened to the album? She was the one who was
obsessed with me, and two mutual friends of ours in Vancouver
invited me to two gigs (not hers, other musicians) and she
effectively did two hit-and-runs on me, in the first moist palming
my right elbow from behind, pulling it to the left, and running off
to the right, and it the second she drank me up with her eyes
"Don’t understand
The touch of your hand [elbow]
I would be the one to fall
I miss the little things
I miss everything about you”
from Sweet Surrender
and
"We meet at the lights
I stare for a while
The world around us disappears
<snip>
Oh but everytime I’m close to you
There’s too much I can’t say
And you just walk away”
from I Love You, and note the “silent approach”.
I did not approach her even when she wanted me to; she
approached me. And when I knew where she lived since
her housemates were listed in the phone book, I never
went near the place.
I suggest you listen to the album; she is obviously obsessed
with a “mystery man” and why couldn’t that “mystery man”
be me, especially given our interactions in the spring of 1995,
and that I think my playful writing on the FTE list might have
fulfilled some of her prophetic dreams.

"For she is the perfect creature, natural in every feature
And I am the geek with the alchemists' stone" (Jimmy MacCarthy)
I'm sorry, David, but I think the supposed messages/references to you in the
lyrics are an unbelievably huge stretch... and that's assuming that the elbow
touching and bar gazing incidents actually occurred.
It is not unbelievable. From 1991 to 1994 I booked, hosted, and
did sound for live music on Friday nights at the UBC grad centre,
and got to know many musicians, including Danielle French,
who recorded a CD with members of Sarah McLachlan’s band.
I also got to know Ariane Behrend, a volunteer with the band
The Paperboys, who I taught a bit about doing sound, and who
told me she regularly went to brunch at Sophie’s Cosmic
Cafe with Sarah McLachlan and her drummer and housemate
(and future husband) Ashwin Sood. Moreover, from early
summer 1994 on I engaged in a lot of playful but non-obsessive
writing on the FTE mailing list, devoted to Sarah McLachlan and
her music, and her record label representative Cathy Barrett
was on the list and must have relayed THE BEST OF my
writing to Sarah for her amusement, and it somehow struck
a chord.
Then is early spring 1995 Ariane put me on the guest list
for Shane MacGowan and The Popes with The Paperboys
opening, at The Commodore Ballroom, and that is
where the elbow pulling incident occurred. And it
was no ordinary touch, but similar to that described in
"There was a time you put your hand on the small of my back I was surprised
that you touched me like that
But there in your hand was a current of life
I could hardly stand.”
It was an electric, warming, compatible touch, but I didn’t
realize it was her until after the later stare incident occurred,
since she ran off so fast.
Then in May 1995 Danielle invited me to her showcase set
for Music West at The Treehouse Lounge in the basement
of The St. Regis hotel. That is where the stare incident
occurred, and it was no ordinary stare, but as if she was
the obsessive fan and I was the star, as if she was
drinking me up with her eyes. But I wish she had
just gotten Ariane or Danielle to introduce us.
If the touch and stare had occurred at the same time
she would have landed this leprechaun, but since
they didn’t we formed what I call an old lock between
me, a straight-type-2-M, and her, a bif (woman attracted
to both genders, though I think she is straight by
lifestyle choice these days). The old lock means
that I cannot get any other bif without her permission
and she cannot get any other straight-type-2-M,
just less compatible with her straight-type-1 men
and bims (males attracted to both genders). Some
other well-known straight-type-2 men with old locks are
Jack Nicholson, Jim Carrey, Leonardo Dicaprio,
Chris Issak, and Josh Groban. If my current magickal
workings actually work, these old locks (and any
other no-sex locks) will be rendered incomplete.
But anyway, I know that there oodles of cases of fans
thinking lyrics are about and/or for them, so I don’t
expect you to believe me.
Interesting back story, David.

On Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 12:30:12 AM UTC-4, David Dalton
Then is early spring 1995 Ariane put me on the guest list
for Shane MacGowan and The Popes with The Paperboys
opening, at The Commodore Ballroom, and that is
where the elbow pulling incident occurred. And it
was no ordinary touch, but similar to that described in
"There was a time you put your hand on the small of my back I was

It was an electric, warming, compatible touch, but I didn’t
realize it was her until after the later stare incident occurred,
since she ran off so fast.
Wait a second...
She allegedly pulled your elbow.
She then wrote a song about someone (unidentified in the lyric) putting
his
hand on the small of her back.
Huh, I said that the lyrics about the small of the back were by
The Weather Station, not by Sarah, but that it was a similar
electric, warming, compatible touch. You are not a very
good reader, and seem to be a contrarian.
I'm a very good reader, David. I just don't have any knowledge of pop music
(post 1964). I don't know a thing about Sarah McLachlan. I googled her to
see
who you were talking about, and found the information about her stalker on
Wikipedia. I assumed that the "Weather Station" was either Sarah's album or
band.
Now you're saying that some band that wasn't connected with Sarah wrote a
lyric about a man placing his hand on the small of a woman's back, and that
this is a secret reference to Sarah's having pulled your elbow?
I didn’t say it was a reference to the elbow touch. I said it
was a similar touch, this time between a bim and a
straight-type-2-F, whereas Sarah and I are a bif and
a straight-type-2-M.
Apart from being a touch (and touches are very common occurrences), why
should Weather Station's lyric be about Sarah touching you?
They aren’t, they are about a similar Touch.
1) You wrote about Sarah in a fan group.
2) A friend of hers *may* have brought some of your posts to her attention.
Obviously she did, based on Sarah’s behaviour towards me
in the spring of 1995.
1) It isn't obvious to me.
2) AFAICS Sarah's only "behavior" was to stare back (if she even was staring)
at someone who was staring at her.
No, I did not initiate the stare. I was coming back from the
washroom and she was standing near the bar and directly
faced me and stared at me as if I was her long lost lover.
3) One night at a bar someone pulled your elbow, but you didn't see who it
was.
I saw her from behind, and my memory of the incident later
was consistent with it being her.
If you only saw her from behind, she might not have even been in the bar. And
your memory of being pulled would be just as consistent if applied to anyone
else who was in the bar.
IMHO, people don't pull on the elbows of strangers (or even of friends). I
suspect that someone caught their jacket or purse on you as they passed. In
any case, the "pulling" would have been accidental.
No, I was on some steps off to the side in a rapidly emptying
bar, and she came up behind me and palmed my right
elbow from behind and pulled it to the left, causing me
to look to the left, and she ran off to the right. Again it
was a warming, electric, compatible Touch, and was
most definitely not accidental.
How can you be sure that Sarah simply wasn't lost in thought and completely
unaware of what her eyes appeared to be "staring" at?
She wasn’t sitting down, she was planted standing about a metre
away from me near the bar, full frontal, no doubt.
I mentioned the songs Sweet Surrender and I Love You.
Other references that may have been to me in her lyrics
1. I Will Remember You (IWRY)
"But once there was a darkness, deep and endless night
You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me light”
which indicated that my playful writing brought her out
of depression, like Jesus casting demons out of
Mary Magdalene.
2. Do What You Have To Do
"And I have the sense to recognize
That I don’t know how to let you go
Every moment marked with apparitions of your soul
I’m ever swiftly moving, trying to escape this desire
<snip>
A glowing ember
Burning hot and burning slow
Deep within, I’m shaken by the violence
Of existing for only you”
3. Adia
"Adia I’m empty since you left me trying to find a way to carry on
I search myself and everyone
to see where we went wrong”
(written after I left Vancouver at the end of 1995,
and note that on the FTE list I referred to her as
S quite often and myself as D at times, and in
the song at times she says “A D” for Adia).
4. Building a Mystery
(written after I wrote her a long letter that later served as
a first draft for my Salmon on the Thorns web page)
"Oh you’re so beautiful
A beautiful fucked up man
You’re setting up your
Razor wire shrine
‘Cause you’re working
Building a mystery
Holding on, holding it in
Oh yeah you’re working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully”
(so that one was less complimentary. And when she
did the song at a September 10, 2004 concert in
Vancouver that I attended, when she said
“beautiful fucked-up man” she looked in my
direction, and I had posted my seat number to
alt.music.s-mclachlan.)
5. Illusions of Bliss
“ ‘Cause it’s you who released me
It’s you who gave me fire
Oh, and now it’s impossible to grow
Without breaking stride, I get so high
Take me out beyond the incline
Make it past the former fault line
For today I let the moment win
Here I go again, saying things I shouldn’t say
Just so I can hear them back from you”
which references my Earth Sciences background,
and again my releasing her from depression.
6. Monsters
"And don’t you know that there’s a wolf stalking in sheep’s
clothing tells me he’s the real thing
Think what your life would be missing
if you didn’t have him to sing
To sing about”
Which references my claim to be similar to The Lamb,
and I guess that I may have been guilty of a little
e-stalking, and that she has sung about me.
The above six, and Sweet Surrender and I Love You
that I quoted from earlier, are all from after the
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy album, so within the
period when she may have been aware of me. But
I also fulfilled prophecies made by her in some of
her earlier songs, especially in my 1991 sun stare, naked
thorn hill climb, and blue rose vision, which I
didn’t discuss online much until late 1996 and 1997,
but I think she was aware of the sun stare.
And I think that she has prophetic dreams ability.
Also at her Sunflower Sunday concert I spread my
arms wide and then cast them towards her, and I
think she saw me and felt something (I later
mentioned it in a review that I posted, which is
on my home page, as is a picture of me with
her on stage on November 14, 2014, which
she wouldn’t have done if she considered me
a stalker).
Also on the night of January 29, 1995, shortly before
new moon, I sent a factor 100 (where 10 is excellent)
kundalini antenna orgasm wave from Vancouver to
her and Crystal (who I had not seen, so it may not have
gone to her) then in New Zealand, and I think she
felt it. Weeks later I received a similar wave that
I think was from her, though at the time I joked that
it may have been from a blue whale near Hawaii.
Also some mystic blocks associated with me including
against recognition of my presence in the artwork of
others, and against my having romantic involvement
with Sarah, have supposedly been lifted, so I hope
you will re-evaluate your position.

A while before the elbow pulling incident I had made a joke
on the FTE list about Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains
teaching Sarah how to pull a pint of Guinness, and I
think I mentioned the elbow pulling trick then. However
I seem to have not saved it in https://www.nfld.com//~dalton/fte.txt .
Also it was not passing in a crowd, it is a huge bar and there
was plenty of room to pass by; most of the crowd had left
by then.
Sarah’s best friend is not named Adia, but Crystal. It
is true that she said that Adia was about Crystal, but
I think she may have lied, and anyway, she has often
said that some of her songs (including Building a Mystery)
are composites drawing on more than one character.
As for why I didn’t approach her at the bar, I meant to.
When the stare ended we both went to the bar and
I meant to say hello but a woman came between us
and it was as if we were swept apart (I guess by that
mystic block). She then ordered a Swan or Sharp’s
(a near beer) and I should have said I’ll have what she’s
having, but I ordered a rye and water, partly a play
on her then hair colour, and partly a play on the song IWRY.
Then I meant to approach her (I was by then alone, my
friends had left) amidst her party, but a song by her
friend Holly McNarland disturbed me and a while later
I left to hear Colin Hay of Men at Work across the
street at The Railway Club. But basically I was somewhat
intimidated by her bold approach, am very introverted,
and partly did not want to bother her. But if Ariane
or Danielle had simply introduced us things would have
been fine.
As for my letters, I started with a short letter in July of 1996
in which I mentioned our 1995 interactions and promised
a longer letter. At that stage someone at her (then small) record
company was reading letters and would have passed
it to her, and probably later passed the long letter without
reading it. The “beautiful fucked up man” and
“building a mystery” comments in Building a Mystery
indicate that she read the long letter, I think including
a comment on my then deities Gaia, Sola, and Cosma
at the end.
Anyway, I know there is a special connection between
me and Sarah, but I don’t expect you to believe me,
but I am not lying about the intensity of the Touch
and the Stare. And now that she is divorced and
as far as I know free from romantic attachments again,
thereis a chance that she will grab me. However,
if the old lock has been rendered incomplete and
the mystic blocks have been lifted, I am now available
to other bifs, and won’t wait for Sarah for long unless
she asks me to (and not in a song).
"How stupid could I be? A simpleton could see
That you’re no good for me
But you’re the only one I see"
The mystic blocks were not lifted when you posted
your latest post, but now supposedly have been.
If you choose to reply again, you can have the
last word; this is getting tiresome. At least
Will seems to think I have a good story.
Is anyone else reading?
*crickets*
David Dalton and Will Dockery decided that they needed to cross post this conversation to rec.arts.poems and alt.music.lyrics, in search of readers. There is no one home at those groups.
The cross post is automatic, when using Nova BBS.

HI SARAH!!! Greetings from Ash and his inner demons! Care to enjoy Celtic
Heavy Metal lyrics with us?
Her ex-husband is named Ash.
And she likes Celtic rap,
That sounds interesting, I don't remember ever reading (or hearing) any of that.

I'll Google it.
C-rap, or Crap, which I might
try doing some of by D-moon (I know at least Nancy
would probably label it as crap, ha).

I was joking, or I guess referring to making up lyrics

David, I have been reading these, and they are quite good... I thank you for posting..!

I didn’t see Rachel’s post, probably since google groups was
being filtered out by Eternal September for a while.

I haven’t written anything poetic in a long while now, but
expect my creativity to return soon, and when it does I
will definitely write some. Though I suppose even now
I could mechanically build something using form, metre,
and rhyme, brick by brick, rather than relying on creative
flow/bread crumb trail/drunken walk of words.

hi reading this now seems FAMILIAR so i am surprised i didn't respond to you, i'm sorry, maybe it's the kind of thing like there was nothing to say, like taking it all in was enough to completely fill me, i can totally relate i hate thinking that what one/you like to do it be creative and you have no idea where it comes from and you can't do it on demand and you just really don't want to "just do it" like write when you have nothing to say waiting for inspiration i always keep thinking that's it i'm done i don't think i have anything left to write or say insofar as making a poem or whatever
Interesting observations, Rachel, interesting how?

They're self explanatory.

However her record label
person who was on the mailing list must have relayed
the best of my writing to her since she silently approached
me twice in the spring of 1995, which is reflected in some
of the lyrics on her 1997 Surfacing album.
i didn't read the whole thing but these looked really good!! :)
do you have finished pieces? i bet those are great. :)
Hi Rachel..... agreed and seconded...!
Hi D.D.... well put..!

Mr. Dalton, you have no poetry writing talent. At. All.

First, you should find out how to write poems and not the embarrassingly juvenile, no meter examples that you have offered.
