Swimming With the Clouds

She had an epiphany
she wants to learn to fly.
Took a sip of coffee from her favorite cup
she knew then the time was to go up
into the clouds
swimming with the clouds.
She wants to fly
touch the sky.

She don't want sympathy
she doesn't plan to die.
Lifts off the ledge looking up
tumbling in the wind like a Dixie Cup
into the clouds
swimming with the clouds.
She wants to fly
reach the sky.

She's flying in the air
where she lands we do not dare to tell.

She's gripped in satori
she's learned how to fly.
She's skyclad now among the stars
way up there, somewhere far.
She's swimming now
out among the clouds.

I posted this comment on another thread, but (because I didn't change
the subject header to refer to SWtC) you may miss that; hence the
repeat here.
It's interesting that, throughout, it's unclear whether she's having
an astral experience, or whether she's piloting a plane and the astral
experience is a metaphor (I've heard and mainly read of pilots talking
about getting a rush from flying.)

One nit: in the last verse you've got her "among the stars", which is
probably as it should be -- she's progressing in every verse. But then
she wouldn't still be "among the clouds," as in your last line. If
there's time, can you change that last line to "above" or "beyond" the
clouds?

Yes, thanks for pointing that out -and for reading and commenting in
the first place- that change makes much more sense and I like to
follow my former teacher Dennis Hammes' "Try to have your writing make
sense" rule as much as possible.

But, I'm also not saying whether she's /really/ in outer space "among
stars" or not or whether the Goober observer, the guy speaking in the
poem (who may or may not be me, "Will Dockery"... even if it is, the
reader shouldn't automatically assume it is, as Karla often points
out) just sees with his eyes that the stars and clouds -and her- are
all up there on the "canvas" of sky.

As my friend Ellen used to tell me: "It means what you want it to
mean."

But, either way, your idea on changing that word is good, and I'll be
going with that.

Good Idea, Dink. Meanwhile, here's the revised version of "Swimming
with the Clouds":

Swimming with the Clouds

She had an epiphany
she wants to learn to fly.
Took a sip of coffee from her favorite cup
she knew then the time was to go up
into the clouds
swimming with the clouds.
She wants to fly
touch the sky.

She don't want sympathy
she doesn't plan to die.
Lifts off the ledge looking up
tumbling in the wind like a Dixie Cup
into the clouds
swimming with the clouds.
She wants to fly
reach the sky.

She's flying in the air
where she lands we do not dare to tell.

She's gripped in satori
she's learned how to fly.
She's skyclad now among the stars
way up there, somewhere far.
She's swimming now
out beyond the clouds.
