Stagger Lee version?

Hi, I don't know where else to look.

I remember a version of the song "Stagger Lee" which is different from
any of the ones I'm able to find.

The lyrics in a couple of places were different, and IIRC, it was more
of a rock version than blues. It may have even been an "add-on" to the
end of another tune.

If I saw a list of the names of performers who had done versions of the
song, I would probably remember who it was.

Thanks, Dean

I have a recording of Woody Guthrie singing Stagger Lee, i think in the
1940's. I also have a version of the song sung by Rob Hunter (wrote many
songs with the Grateful Dead).

Maybe Lloyd Price?

Stagger Lee
The night was clear, and the moon was yellowAnd the leaves came tumblin'
down. . . I was standin' on the cornerWhen I heard my bull dog bark.He was
barkin' at the two menWho were gamblin' in the dark.It was Stagger Lee and
Billy,Two men who gambled late.Stagger lee threw a seven,Billy swore that he
threw eight."Stagger Lee, said Billy,"I can't let you go with that."You have
won all my money,"And my brand-new Stetson hat."Stagger Lee went homeAnd he
got his .44.He said, "I'm goin' to the ballroom"Just to pay that debt I
owe."(bridge)Go, Stagger LeeStagger Lee went to the ballroomAnd he strolled
across the ballroom floor. He said "You did me wrong, Billy."And he pulled
his .44."Stagger Lee, said Billy,"Oh, please don't take my life!"I've got
three hungry children,"And a very sickly wife."Stagger Lee shot BillyOh, he
shot that poor boy so hardThat a bullet went through BillyAnd broke the
bartender's bar.Go, Stagger Lee, go, Stagger Lee!Go, Stagger Lee, go,
Stagger Lee!(to fade)

Thanks to both, but nope.

This one was from the 70's, I think, and one of the lines was:

"Stagger Lee, said to Mrs. Billy, you don't believe your man is dead---
Go on down to the barroom, see the hole I shot in his head".

----which wasn't in any other version I know of.

Also there was no "Go Stagger Lee" chorus.

I've tried bn.com also, and it isn't there. Oh well---just hoping to get
lucky.

Again, thanks.

There were several versions of that song, Lloyd Price even had 2, but I don't
recall those lyrics. You might also try searching on STACK O' LEE or BILLY

I prefer the one sang by Pat Boone
